BridgeSwitch-2 Motor Driver ICs Support 1 HP Motors, Slashes Inverter Sleep-Mode Consumption to <10 mW
Power Integrations has enhanced its hardware-software bundle for BLDC motor drives with the BridgeSwitch™-2 integrated half-bridge (IHB) motor-driver IC family. The high-voltage devices support motors from 30 to 746 W (1 HP) and deliver inverter efficiency of up to 99% for a broad range of applications, including:
- Heat exchange fans
- Refrigerator compressors
- Fluid and circulation pumps
- Gas boiler combustion fans
- Washing machine drums
- Kitchen blenders and mixers

Compact and Efficient
The IHB architecture reduces component count by 50% and PCB space by 30% over discrete designs. The new ICs also allow inverters to go into sleep mode, reducing driver power consumption to less than 10 mW. This frees up valuable power for functions like network access and monitoring – which is critical under regulated standby power limits.
Precise Control
BridgeSwitch-2 devices achieve precise motor control with the built-in real-time reporting of phase current (IPH) information. They offer a choice of error-flag or comprehensive fault bus reporting, supporting advanced functions like failure prediction.
Fast to Market
The MotorXpert™ software suite, which supports BridgeSwitch-2 motor drivers, includes single-phase trapezoidal control and three-phase sensor-less Field Oriented Control (FOC) modules, greatly accelerating inverter development. Additionally, BridgeSwitch-2 ICs manage operational exceptions in hardware, allowing for the use of IEC 60730 Class A safety software and reducing certification time by months.
