Delivering Improved Peak Power and Dynamic Transient Response to Unlock Lighter, more Powerful EV Architectures

With each passing year, electric vehicles (EVs) on the market are becoming increasingly reliant on electrically actuated systems, such as steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire and active suspension. In fact, over 40% of new vehicles in the first half of 2024 were fitted with brake-by-wire systems, which was a 20-percentage-point increase over the previous year.

PCB Layout Considerations for Ultra Low RDS(on) 15 V – 40 V GaN Power Transistors

With the advent of next-generation GaN transistors operating in the 40 V to 15 V range, RDS(on) specifications have reached the remarkable level of hundreds of micro-ohms, significantly outperforming comparably-sized power MOSFETs. To fully capitalize on the advantages of these ultra-low resistance FETs, careful PCB layout is essential to prevent any additional resistance that could undermine their performance. This article will examine various layout strategies for GaN FETs, analyzing how different PCB configurations affect added resistance for each design.

Rugged MOSFETs for Robust Power Design: A Forgotten but Essential Metric

As the market shifts towards newer technologies, the availability of planar MOSFETs has significantly declined, leaving few suitable options for industrial and mission-critical systems where robustness and consistent performance count. Littelfuse addresses this gap with its Polar MOSFET portfolio, offering rugged and thermally reliable products that are tailored for industrial power conversion environments.

Shaping the future of mobility: Sustainable rail transportation with high power SiC modules

As we inch towards a future of net-zero emissions, diesel trains are being replaced by hybrid-propulsion trains. These can operate with the support of electricity from overhead lines or – where electrification of railway track is not feasible – from on-board batteries or hydrogen fuel-cells. For such hybrid-propulsion trains, energy efficiency and weight optimization are of crucial importance. Both can be delivered by silicon carbide power modules.

Breaking Through the Limits: Why True Per-Cell ADC Architecture Matters in BMS

A BMS IC is essentially a collection of functions built around a measurement engine that monitors cell voltages, current, coulomb count, and temperature. The cornerstone of any BMS is its ability to measure these parameters with sufficient accuracy - and do so cost-effectively. While building accurate ADCs is not inherently difficult (precision ADCs have been around for decades), the real challenge lies in making them small, efficient, and affordable enough to scale - particularly when trying to match the number of ADCs to the number of battery cells.

Power Management
Conversion to Core Voltage in a Single Step

This article describes the possibility of directly converting high voltages, such as 48 V or 54 V, to core voltages (usually below 1 V) in a single step. Such a direct conversion not only saves space and enhances efficiency, but also reduces the cost associated with designing input power rails. Compared to using a 12 V intermediate bus carrying the same power, less copper is consumed when routing a high voltage bus.
